‘Contacted’: Chelsea have now spoken to Premier League winner about becoming permanent manager
Journalists Sergio Fernandez and Alvaro de Grado have claimed that Chelsea have made contact with Jose Mourinho about becoming their new manager.
The Portuguese international has obvious history with the Blues, having managed them on two different occasions already.
In both spells, the club were successful in the Premier League, most recently in 2015.
Those titles are a distant memory from where the club are now. Graham Potter was recently sacked as a result of them dropping into the bottom half of the table.
With Frank Lampard set to come in for the remainder of the season on a caretaker basis, discussions are underway for who will be the permanent face of the project in the coming seasons.
Fernandez and de Grado have claimed that the Blues have been in contact with Mourinho over a potential job.
They said: “In addition, Chelsea have also contacted at least two more coaches this week: Nuno Espirito Santo … and Jose Mourinho.
“Yes, the current coach of Roma has received the call from the blues, which he has already directed in two different stages: the first between 2004 and 2007 and the second between 2013 and 2015.”
It would be unlikely that the new owners would return to a Roman Abramovich favourite, even with his impressive past behind him.
The reported favourites for the job are Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique. The Spaniard even travelled to London yesterday after impressing in initial talks.
However, the decision made to wait until the end of the season looks like it may lend to the former Bayern Munich man being hired, given that he is waiting for the end of the season before taking his next job in management.
