History of Stamford bridge

For a few years now, they have been trolls and banters on Chelsea fans concerning the fact that they are tenants and not rightful owners of Stamford Bridge. To this effect, they are called names like 'Rent Boys', 'Fulham Tenants' and many others. This poses the question who owns the Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea was founded in 1905 and since then, they have been playing at Stamford Bridge till today. The stadium was opened in 1877 and was used by the London Athletic Club until 1904 when the lease was acquired by two brothers Gus and Joseph Mears.

The two brothers offered the club to Fulham Football Club, but they rejected because of financial problems facing the club. After considering to sell the pitch to a railway company, they decided to form their own football club, Chelsea, to occupy the ground as a rival to Fulham. This implies that the owner of the pitch also founded Chelsea Football Club and decided to use it as it's home ground.

In 1982, Ken Bates bought the club for £1 which is equivalent to about 500 Naira today. Unfortunately, Bates did not buy Stamford Bridge and Chelsea had no home of their own. The ground was then sold to Marley Estates, a property developer company. The company was later forced into bankruptcy in the early 1990s. Bates used this opportunity to buy the land again and Chelsea went back to their former home.

All the structures and buildings at Stamford Bridge were built by Chelsea Football Club. Today the Stadium is owned by Chelsea Pitch Owners, a non-profit organisation which is part of the Chelsea Football Club.

I hope this article will end the trolls from other clubs on Chelsea fans. The fact of that Fulham are not owners of Stamford Bridge
